What inspires me as a designer

As an inspiring fashion merchandiser and wannabe dress designer, there are many things that intrigue and inspire me. There are often times when I look around and think to myself, "Wow that pattern would look great on a mini dress", or "Hmm, that color is gorgeous! I wonder what other colors or patterns would look good with it". As ridiculous as it sounds, I find myself looking at objects or environments with a different approach than some around me. Sometimes I will try to take in the patterns that a surrounding tree has on its bark, or the way a sunset looks. Then later, I'll think about what type of material would best translate those images and how they would look on a dress.

So many things inspire me, and once i start looking, it gets hard to stop! The picture of a dress I drew and uploaded (to the right) has quite a few inspirations. Pink and yellow are actually two of my favorite colors, and my bed sheets just happen to be those colors. When I was drawing this I was sitting on my bed and coloring, and I suppose that the sheets influenced and inspired my color palette! The silhouette is one of my favorites, and I see it all the time on actresses and other famous women. It's an elegant, long flowing dress, with feminine details (such as a low-cut front, tapered waist, and thin straps). To be honest, however, the pattern on this dress was not really inspired by much. I love drawing little polka dots, and i thought putting white triangles on the fabric would be an interesting addition. Once I did so, I decided that I liked it and so that's the way the dress is now!
If I were going to make this dress, the fabric would be some sort of flowing, chiffon material. I would want whoever was wearing it to be able to move about gracefully and freely. The fabric would need to flow and I would love it if when the wearer walked, it would make that nice swishy sound (you know the one. when you're wearing a longer dress that you almost have to hold up to walk in, and the fabric rubs against itself on the bottom...it almost whispers). The bottom would have a many thin layer, so as to create that billowing look. I think I would want the black dots to be dyed on the fabric, but the white triangle pieces to be hand-sewn on. Perhaps I would even like them to be made out of lace or a different material.
As I'm sure you can tell, inspiration comes to people in many different ways. From films to food, and skies to sheets, you never know when your next inspiration will hit you!

This is really good. I agree inspiration definitely comes from many different things. I like the fact that you gave credit to yourself for designing it but also supported other designers who have designed similar dresses to the one you have shared with us. I like your design and it makes me feel warm, happy and even romantic. I love the colors you chose… They definitely mesh well together and clearly (to me) is representative of the sunset…
I could see the dress with a hat, scarf, or even gloves… (not all together though =) ) But anyway this dress is extremely versatile and I wish you the best in the future…

I'm the same way when with sketching a design. I havent done it in a while but when I did I would think about the evironment around me as well as creations from different designers and transfer that into whatever I feel like sketching.

I love and can relate to how you focus on interesting patterns and unique colors in a design. I am the same way, I feel like a cocktail dress can be dressed up with the right color and patterns on it. A dress does not have to be long to be beautiful and elegant. I really like interesting fabrics and texture, kind of like how you said you liked to look at the details on the bark of trees. Nature and architecture can inspire someone so much when designing... the colors of a sunset is a very good example :)

I really like the attention to detail of the fabric displayed in your sketch. From the shading of the color throughout the design, to the sparkling accents, it comes together naturally and fits the style of the dress. Very nice.

I tend to do the same thing when i find myself sketching a design; without really noticing where my inspiration came from its something i ran my eyes over in my room like you did with the colors chosen for your design. I think the color combination is fabulous! ( i think its beacuse yellow and pink are two of my favorite colors too) It definitely caught my eye as i scrolled down the list of our classmates. The design and idea is wonderful and I wish you the best in dress design.

I find myself getting inspiration in the same ways you do. I can be shopping in a store, see a new color and picture in my mind what else that would look good with. Your sketch is absolutely amazing, I like too how the yellow gets darker near the end of the dress. It is perfectly elegant, a kind of a dress you would wear to a ball!

Your dress is really amazing. I am really impressed. I wish I was able to do something like that! But I do understand where you are coming from with your inspiration. I get inspiration from different colors and things around me even just for a new outfit to wear. You're really talented!

I am really impressed with your design! The detailing and color use in your sketch is fabulous. I can imagine the dress being worn on any "redcarpet" event or similar occasions. Even though you arent looking to be a designer and do your own sketchen, you certainly have a great talent for it! And as you commented on my blog, when you look good you feel good and the other way around. Wearing a dress like this, I dont have a doubt in my mind!

This design is gorgeous. I think that the plunging v-neck is very flattering on the body. When I first saw it I thought it looked very whimsical and dream-like. The gradation of colors is magnificent and very well drawn. I would have never thought to mix both bright yellow and pale pink together but it worked. Altogether I thought the look was very regal and elegant.

Omg I love yellow!!! This is a really great sketch. I can see all the detail you put into to it from the yellow fading to the train. It's beautiful, looks like something off the red carpet that some celebrity would wear. Keep up the great talent, wish you the best!

That dress is SO pretty!!! It's different but not crazy unwearable. I could see myself wearing something like that.

I really love your design. It is definitely a design that is functionable and wearable. Personally, if I saw this dress in a store, I would probably be interested in buying it.

Wow! Your dress seems to have got a lot of comments. I guess like everyone else - I too really loved the sketch.

The colors choices are very interesting - i hadn't imagined yellow and pink in an evening dress the way you have chosen to mix them - but it definitely works.

This drawing is very good. When I saw it I instantly wanted to wear it. I love the use of color and can definitly see where you get your inspiration. I havent done much sketching in a long time i like to just see the things laying there then put them together. But i wish you well in the future because this design is very nicely done!

Your approach to design is great. Obtaining inspiration from a tree trunk and then abstracting it and then finding materials that will better communicate this abstraction is wonderful. That is how a designer can make powerful clothes that really speak to people on a personal level. When people see a piece of clothing like that, they know in their mind that there is something familiar within the design. However, since you have abstracted it they can not quite make out what that familiarity is. This leave the consumer with a good feeling and a sense of intrigue, but without an explanation as to why. So good job. Keep it up.
